"Unpredictable is an outstanding effort and ..."
"Unpredictable sounds rich and polished"
"John gives strong vocals (Marc Cohn sound), fine guitar work, as would be expected powerful songwriting and great production"
John McVey was born in Princeton, NJ. He was given a guitar for his eighth birthday. He was completely self-taught until college, where he majored in music. He graduated from Rutgers University with a BA. He was a piano tuner for years, while putting himself through school and beginning his songwriting and performing career. He currently works as a producer/engineer at Coupe Studios in Boulder, CO. He still writes songs and makes CDs and performs live.
He’s been named The National Academy of Songwriters “Artist Of The Year.” He’s won the Kerrville “New Folk” Contest, and has been a finalist in many others, like New Folks, in CO, and Napa Folks Festival in CA. Even early on, with his first band, he won the Marlboro Music Talent Roundup in Philadelphia, and went on to be a finalist in Nashville, competing with winners from eight other cities around the US. McVey has also written, produced, recorded and performed many commercial spots. Best known is the TELE Award winning “Umpire” spot for The Foundation For A Better Life. He wrote and performed the song for this 60 second spot, which has been played millions of times since 1999. Others include The US Ski Team, Dish Network, The Idaho Lottery, Ford Trucks, and many more.
He’s shared stages with Jonatha Brooke, Shawn Mullins, Vonda Shepard, Edwin McCain, Joe Ely, Lari White and many more. He’s appeareded on TV shows like Good Morning Atlanta and Nashville’s CMT, and many, many radio shows. He’s recorded with musicians like Jonatha Brooke, Patty Griffin, Duke Levine, Matt Rollings, Ron Miles. He’s given his time and his music to national charities like Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Make A Wish Foundation. And he’s donating a percentage of sales of his new CD to the Kids Food Basket program in Grand Rapids, MI.
Since 1990, McVey has been a soothing presence on the CDs of Music Together, a music education program for pre-school children and their parents. He is the “daddy” in a virtual family depicted on these CDs. This program is now multi national and has reached millions of families, world-wide.
John has produced hundreds of projects. Starting as an artist gives him a huge advantage as a producer. He’s spent most of his life on the business end of a microphone (and still does regularly, both live and in the studio), and is able to contribute this experience to his artist clients. As a writer, he is a student of what makes a song work. As a music enthusiast, he is a student of sonic excellence. As a player and singer, he is a student of accuracy and soulful expression. As a student of all of these things, he is able to bring his years of experience and hundreds of projects to get the most out of every performance, every instrument, and every piece of equipment.
John McVey brings a unique and contagious enthusiasm to everything he’s a part of. It’s obvious he loves what he does.
